English as a Second Language (ESL)

The American Place offers free, in-person ESL classes in the Downtown Library. Classes are for adults, age 18 and above, whose native language is not English. A special after school ESL program is available to students enrolled in Hartford’s high schools. 

Students improve their English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Teachers use a variety of activities, including online programs. Visits to local historic and civic institutions are arranged to provide students the opportunity to learn more about the American heritage. Additional job training and is provided for those students seeking employment.  

CLASS SCHEDULEClasses run from September to June in three 13-week cycles, with cycles starting in September, January and April. Most classes meet on weekdays, two or three days a week for two hours each day. Select classes, meet on Saturday mornings for 3 hours. 

REGISTRATION:  Registration is in person by appointment. Please complete the ESL Application Form below to schedule an appointment. An English proficiency test (1 hour) is given at the time of registration to determine class placement.

We offer a family program that includes special educational activities for your children. The program also teaches you more about resources available to you and your children to learn together at home or at the library. If there is space, you may attend more than one session.
