GED Testing at the Library
Hartford Public Library operates official GED Test centers at the Downtown Library and at West Middle School. Wherever you decide to test, the process is as follows:

1. Check your eligibility
To register for the GED test, you must:
- be a resident of Connecticut;
- be 17 years of age or older and officially withdrawn from school for at least six months;
- not be enrolled in school; and
- not have graduated from high school
Individuals who have secondary school diplomas from countries outside the United States are also eligible as above.

2. Create an account at GED.com
Go to GED.com, the official GED website, and create an account.
3. Check for alerts
As you will see at your GED account’s “My Alerts” page, before you can schedule a GED test you must take the GED Ready – The Official Practice Test and score a minimum of 145.
4. Schedule your test
After you have passed the “GED Ready” practice test at 145 or higher, log into your GED.com account.
- Select a test center at the Hartford Public Library Downtown, West Middle School, or another Connecticut location.
- Select which test subjects (“subtests”) you wish to take.
- Select a day and time that works for you.
- If applicable, pay the fee.
5. Take your test
Be sure to bring the following to the test center:
Proof of identity / proof of Connecticut residency (a passport or a Connecticut driver’s license, driver’s permit, or ID card).
Payment: Non-veterans and test-takers 21 or older must pay a fee of $13.00 to test. This includes the cost of your diploma once you pass the GED test.
If you are testing at one of the Library’s testing locations, be sure to review these directions:

If you are on foot or taking the bus:
Enter through the main entrance at 500 Main St. or around the corner at the Arch St. entrance.
If you are driving:
Metered parking at 25 cents per 15 minutes up to 2 hours, is available on the Arch Street lot adjacent to the Library, Mondays through Fridays. Parking is free after 6 pm. Machines take cash or credit cards. Parking is free on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Sheldon Street Garage accepts credit or debit cards, not cash. Rates are $2.50 per hour for the first two hours; $8 for the day. Weekend rats are $1.50 for the first two hours; $5 for the day.
Both lots have handicapped spaces.
Metered street parkings is also available on Main, Sheldon and Arch streets.

If you are on foot or taking the bus:
Enter through the main entrance at 927 Asylum Avenue.
If you are driving:
Drive to 44 Niles Street and enter the school’s driveway (between the school and an apartment building). Go all the way to the back of the parking lot and you will see a white door (see photo below). Next, please call the security desk number (860)-695-5510 to be allowed in.
NOTE: You can only park in the school’s parking lot after 3:30 p.m. However, there is usually parking on Niles Street.

Retesting
- You must wait 60 days before retaking any failed subtest.
- You can retake any GED subtest no more than three times per year.
- You can retest twice per subject at a reduced rate if you do so within one year.
