The American Place offers free, in-person ESL classes as well as online courses. Students improve their English skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Teachers use a variety of activities, including visits to local historic and civic institutions to provide students the opportunity to learn more about American culture. Additional job training is provided for students who are seeking employment. (Note: Most of our classes are federally funded through the CT State Department of Education, Adult Division. Awards are announced in August and determine the number of classes we offer.)

Please complete and submit the interest form to receive more information about registration. Registration is held in person and includes an English assessment to help us place you in the appropriate level. The registration and testing process typically takes 2–3 hours.

About our classes
- Everyday English and Work Readiness
This class helps students build confidence using English at work. Topics include how to communicate with coworkers and supervisors, workplace expectations, and American work culture. - Family Literacy
NOTE: These classes meet twice a week online and once a week in person at the library, where parents and children participate in fun, hands on learning activities together. Families without a computer or home Internet access will be offered alternative options to ensure full participation.
Las clases se realizan dos veces por semana en línea y una vez por semana de manera presencial en la biblioteca, donde padres e hijos participan juntos en actividades de aprendizaje prácticas, divertidas e interactivas. Las familias que no cuenten con una computadora o acceso a internet en casa recibirán opciones alternativas para garantizar su participación.
- English for Jobs in the Food Industry
For people interested in working in restaurants, catering, or other food-related jobs. Students will learn useful English for the workplace and prepare for a certificate that shows employers they are ready to work in the food industry. - Guided Online Learning ENGLISH FOR EVERYONE FLYER
If you were unable to join a class this cycle due to late registration, or scheduling conflict, this Guided Online Learning class allows us to reserve your spot for the next session while helping you begin your English studies right away. An instructor will introduce you to an easy, interactive computer program designed to build your English skills—at any level. After this orientation, you can continue practicing in the library or study from home whenever it fits your schedule. Complete 42 hours of learning and earn a Certificate of Completion.
